3 Women Capture Suspect With Their Purses

The London police are looking for a trio of middle-aged women who bagged a fleeing fugitive, armed only with their Christmas shopping bags and purses on Dec. 14 in Worcester, England. A spokesman for West Mercia police said that the three women did not know each other and appealed for them to come forward. He said, “They were walking over the bridge some distance apart when they each realised, in the space of a few seconds, that a man was being pursued and was heading straight for them along the pavement. They had very little time to make up their minds what to do and react. Almost acting in unison, they each responded in exactly the same way - they tried to apprehend the man, not knowing whether he was armed or could have injured them. Although we have concerns for the consequences of their actions, we fully endorse them and applaud their courage. We want to thank the courageous trio.”
The man, who was wanted on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and assaulting three police officers, was spotted by officers in Worcester town centre last Friday but fled when they approached him. The uniformed and plain-clothed officers were unable to catch man, whom they had been trying to trace for three months. Closed-circuit TV captured one woman bravely blocking the sidewalk, forcing the fugitive to run into the road, while a second lambasted him with her purse. The third joined in, forcing the man into the arms of a nearby van driver, who held him until police arrived.
Richard Bull, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said, “There they were, all minding their own business, when they realized simultaneously that action needed to be taken. They didn’t know one another, but they all thought the same thing. They surprised the man, but also demoralized him - after all, the world and his wife were already after him.” He said police do not encourage citizens to apprehend suspects, who can turn nasty. “But we admire greatly what they have done.”
