Carrie McCandless, 29, was an English teacher and cheerleading coach at Brighton Charter High School, and wife of the school principal, Chris McCandless. She has been charged with sexual assault on a child and contributing to the delinquency of a minor for allegedly having sex with a 17-yr-old student on a school trip. She turned herself in to authorities in Jefferson County Tuesday morning, 14 November, posted $20,000 bond and was released that afternoon. Carrie faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

McCandless ended up being the only adult chaperone on a school-sponsored student camping trip to Estes Park during the last weekend in October after an adult male chaperone backed out at the last minute, according to the Brighton police chief.
Investigators said McCandless and the 17-year-old boy ended up alone in the same room at the YMCA of the Rockies. Charges were filed after police interviewed the boy and about a dozen other witnesses.

News reporters have tried to interview her, but she refused, saying that she didn’t know the student and hadn’t done anything wrong. When she bonded out, she hurriedly entered a car without making a comment. Her attorney has also refused interviews.

The school board president, David Mundy, is also being charged with failure to report and tampering with a witness or victim. The president apparently knew about the alleged incident but didn’t report it to police until two weeks later. State law requires school officials to report allegations of child abuse or neglect to police immediately. Investigators first learned about the case from a news reporter.

Parents are upset that they haven’t been notified about the allegations against one of Brighton’s teachers.
“I’m in shock,” said parent Darlene Mueller. “I think the students are the most important people and that parents should know about this to try to protect their child.”

Although McCandless taught in Brighton, the alleged assault occurred in Larimer County, so Brighton police are working with the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office in the case.

It’s the second time a staffer has been accused of sexual impropriety with a student at the Brighton Charter High School in the past year. David Mundy Jr., 31, is accused of sexually assaulting a student during a party at his apartment last summer. He was a firefighter and occasional substitute teacher at the school. He is also the son of the charter school board’s president.

The school district in Brighton has joined the investigation of Brighton Charter High School. The district said it wants to know if there was a cover-up by the charter board members.
Dist. 27J superintendent Dr. Rod Blunck met with a charter school board member and an attorney, and said he told charter school board member Ken Mitchell to be upfront with the community about what has happened and about what is being done.

District officials said they not only have an obligation to investigate, but an obligation to help. Officials have offered advice to the charter board.
“Issues do happen. People need to be informed,” said Blunck. “When issues do happen, especially when it comes to their kids, the quicker people are informed that the issue is being investigated, the more sense of ease they feel and the more confident they feel with the people that are with that program.”
Blunck said the investigation will determine if the district’s contract with Brighton Charter High School has been violated. If it has, the district’s reaction could range from admonishing the charter school board to revoking their contract.

But, who is really the victim here? Carrie McCandless? or the 17 year old student?. Although a 17 year old male is technically a minor most are not virgins. Males of this age are actively seeking sexual experience and use a great deal of coercion and effort to achieve this goal. 
Brighton Charter High School’s governing board will hold a public hearing at the school.
