Depression - When you should get help!Depression is not something you can just “snap out of.” It’s caused by an imbalance of brain chemicals, along with other factors. Like any serious medical condition, depression needs to be treated.

There is no doubt in my mind that depression is a very real and often undiagnosed condition. (For many people, the winter weather and holidays can bring on a severe bout with depression.) However, it’s also quite treatable. How do you know when your “case of the blues” or chronic self-doubt has become something more? Here are some things to look for:
1. Sleep problems: both insomnia and sleeping all the time are signs of depression.
2. Appetite problems: loss of appetite or major weight gain.
3. Fatigue: lack of energy, loss of interest in daily activities.
4. Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness or terrible guilt.
5. Difficulty concentrating or extreme indecisiveness. If you experience any of these problems for more than two weeks, consult a doctor. Should you experience any suicidal thoughts, seek professional help immediately. Depression can come in many forms, and can be situational, i.e. caused by a traumatic event. It can also be genetic. These days, with all of the treatments available, there is no reason to spend large amounts of time in misery. Life is short, be sure to live it fully!

Depression can make you feel hopeless and helpless. But just taking the first step “deciding to get treatment” can make all the difference.

Even after you’ve learned that you have depression and sought treatment for it, you won’t feel better right away. Depression can be frustrating, because recovering from it takes time.
