Erin McNaught, Topless Miss Australia 2006
Category: Gossip, Personality, BeautyErin McNaught, a 24-year-old Brisbane university student and model, was crowned Miss Universe Australia and has her plane ticket booked for the finals contesting the main title, Miss Universe in Los Angeles on July 23. But topless pictures of the beauty wearing only her undies and a cowboy hat, published on the cover of last week’s Zoo Weekly, have triggered calls for her to be stripped of her title, according to media reports. The Miss Universe Australia pageant said nothing would stop this year’s winner, Erin McNaught, from contesting the main title.
The director of the pageant denied judges had made a mistake in picking the science degree student now living in Queensland and insisted she would still go on to represent the country at the international competition in Los Angeles next month.
Zoo Weekly editor Paul Merrill said the magazine stood by the photos and its model, saying it was “right behind” Ms McNaught’s quest to become Miss Universe. “Erin deserves to be Miss Australia because she’s the prettiest girl we have,” he said in a statement. “It would be criminal if meddling killjoys took her title away.”
The national director and licensee of the Miss Universe Australia competition, Jim Davie, said there was “nothing in that magazine that demeans the Miss Universe pageant”.
Ms McNaught would not be stripped of her title, he said. “She’s not representing Afghanistan,” Mr Davie pointed out. “All models have done some shots with their breasts shown. This is 2006. “Every second girl on the beach in summer bathes topless.” he added.
Mr Davie said he had first heard about the photographs when he was signing Ms McNaught’s contract. Mr Davie said some of the criticism had come from people associated with the pageant who were not officials but had been “judges on the night”. And he will not going to sacrifice Erin for people who have egos and things they want to achieve. His decision is very clear, Erin is going to represent us.
As the national director of the competition, Mr. Davie said that he was the only person with the authority to strip Ms McNaught of her title, and the only way he could be overridden was if officials in New York gave him instructions. But he does not believe that’s going to happen.
Mr. Davie described Ms McNaught, who won the Miss Universe Australia pageant by the biggest margin of votes in 15 years, as an “exceptionally nice girl”.
“She’ll be a great ambassador for us, she’s as nice as Jennifer Hawkins” Mr Davie said.
Newcastle-born Ms Hawkins, a former model and cheerleader, was named Miss Universe in 2004. A year later she handed the crown over to Miss Canada, Natalie Glebova.
Erin’s mother, Lin McNaught, said the pictures were taken long before this month’s Miss Australia competition in Melbourne and that organisers had known about them at the time of her entry.
This did nothing to ease the anger of one judge, Jonathan Westbrook, a Perth businessman, who said neither he nor his colleagues had known about the topless shots.
An angry Mr Westbrook accused Ms McNaught of “dragging the contest into the gutter”. Mr Westbrook said that Ms McNaught should have been disqualified and that the title should have been handed to another entrant, Perth’s Leah Fuhrmann.
Mr Diavatiotis, who made the winner’s diamond encrusted tiara - which he has yet to receive back - said McNaught’s topless photos “sent the wrong message”.
“Miss Universe Australia is meant to be a princess, not somebody who looks hot in a cowboy hat and bikini,” he said.
Pageant judges Cathy Freeman, Jonathan Westbrook, Lillian Frank and Con Diavatiotis and pageant coordinator Deborah Miller say McNaught is not worthy of the Miss Universe Australia title. The winner had also failed to turn up for sponsorship commitments in Melbourne last week and did not deserve either the $5000 prize or $20,000 tiara.
