Hu Xiaodan, Forbidden City Collection

Hu Xiaodan is the world famous Chinese costume designer, participate with his famous design, Forbidden City, in the fashion show Tokyo, 27 November 2006, as part of the “Chinese Culture Festival” which will last until 22 December in Japan. “Western clothes are designed according to their people’s aesthetic principles and characteristics. Chinese, however, are brought up in totally different cultural settings.” said Xiaodan to China and the World Cultural Exchange magazine. “With our own character and temperament, we should study what sort of design is most suitable for us,” he added.
Mr. Hu is also known for the unusual way he chooses his models, while most designers seek experienced catwalk models, Mr. Hu prefers novices. “I don’t appreciate those models who follow Western styles, which are contrary to their nature,” he explained. Mr. Hu even sets up classes to train amateur models free of charge, all because he wants them to be elegant and graceful in the classic Chinese sense and not be influenced by the West.
Mr. Hu Xiaodan has held individual fashion show several times since 1989. In 1996, Mr. Hu has awarded the annual Pioneering Designer prize when his
Forbidden City collection was chosen for the International Fashion Exhibition in Dusseldorf, Germany. As the first Chinese costume designer who had been invited by the famous eIgedo international costume exhibition, Mr. Hu and his design “the Forbidden City” created sensation in this exhibition, and lift up the Five-Starred Red Flag for Chinese and Chinese costumes for the first. In the same year, Mr. Hu was invited to Europe fashion anniversary, and showed the “Forbidden City” garments creating great sensation. It is the first time that a Chinese designer was invited to visit the Europe fashionable dress center, and the first time that garments of Chinese were showed in Europe.
Since then, he has gone on to show the collection in iconic locations all over the world, including the Coliseum in Rome, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Athenaeum in Athens, and the Statue of Liberty in New York.
At the ceremony on Friday, 17 Nov. Chinese Culture Minister Sun Jiazheng said that China and Japan are close neighbors geographically, enjoy frequent contacts historically, and learn from each other and interact culturally. He also said the festival will show Chinese modern culture in an all- round way to let more Japanese know about today’s China and Chinese people. One of the aims of the cultural event is to achieve mutual understanding and mutual appreciation between the two peoples.
