Miss Universe 2006 Dress Design a Copy?
Category: Women Business, Gossip, Fashion, BeautyRishti Diwan, a London-based Indian fashion designer claims that a Puerto Rican designer has been skillfully copying her original technique of metal design, and the technique has been used by Miss Universe Zuleyka Rivera Mendoza on her pageant night. Diwan, who has appeared in the International Textiles Fashion Forecast Spring Summer Collection 2006, says initially she thought there were differences in the design (like the lengths and the neckline were dissimilar), but became convinced later after taking a closer look.
“At the MA level, we record every step of development. Thus, I have a step-by-step record in form of photographs that have date and time on them.” But isn’t this London College of Fashion pass-out going to take any legal action?
“I’m not going to take any legal action as of now. Since I am the master of the technique and this designer is a reproduction-maker, I feel that he cannot match up to my technical skills. This automatically puts me at a higher level than him as a designer.
It seems that he’s one of the most renowned designers from Puerto Rico and I am honoured to have inspired such an established designer. I’m not accusing anybody and would rather take it as a compliment,” Diwan explains.
But the design had demanded a lot of time and energy, she agrees. “It’s a design that came from within. I believe in the rule that fashion cannot be derived from fashion. “I don’t have a TV at home and didn’t follow the contest. But as soon as the photograph of Miss Universe appeared on Evening Standard, I was stormed by phone calls from all my friends and acquaintances, who had witnessed my productions.
It took me a while to believe what I was seeing, till I saw very clear images sent by friends to me,” says Diwan, who is currently in Delhi. Ask her whether she has the copyright of the designs and Diwan is quick to quip, “No, I don’t have any copyright”.
“I was determined to come up with a concept from deep inside me and something that is very very me, my character, my taste, my personality, my experiences, my childhood memories, the way I sketch .. the way my pencil has moved since I was a child … all these factors have influenced my concept development.
That sketch was then my sole inspiration and helped me develop the technique. The entire sketch was on motion before my eyes as I translated my inspiration into a fashion context.
My final sketch of the design bagged me an opportunity to represent Britain at an international competition for fashion designers called Concours international des jeunes Createurs de mode also known as Fashion Futures showcased at Musee de Louvre in paris,” Diwan continues.
With no legal action potential but just a couple of press conferences, she said, “since I don’t have a patent, I can’t sue anyone. But if people like this design, all I wish is that they should source their stuff from me, the creator, and not from the one who copied.”
So…, what do you think?

There a similarities on the dress; however, the designed by the Puerto Rican designers is a sexier design more appealing design. Ms. Diwan designs is definitely more geared to the larger, unattractive and matronly gals outthere..
