PARIS Hilton caused a sensation on Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Tuesday when she swam and sunbathed in a white bikini, talked on her cellphone and hosed herself down as she made her exit with her busty brunette pal, Kim Kardashian. Hilton is Down Under because she’s being paid a reported $1 million to host a New Year’s Eve party for a new low-carb beer, Bondi Blonde, being launched by Sydney advertising guru John Singleton. Among her duties is helping select one of 40 Aussie beach babes as the face of the new brew. The slogan for the beer - which takes its name from the surfing mecca where Post columnist Steve Dun leavy grew up - is, “at last, a natural Blonde in Bondi!”

Arriving in Sydney, dressed in striped top and her trademark oversized white sunglasses, Paris said, “Hey Australia, I am really excited to be here in Sydney for New Year’s”.

Hilton dined with a dozen young friends at celebrity restaurant Otto at Woolloomooloo’s Finger Wharf. As two bodyguards kept the paparazzi at bay during lunch, Hilton happily strolled down the wharf posing for the throng of professional photographers and fans.

Before being whisked away, Hilton wound down the car window to answer press questions about what she was wearing. The shoes? “Louis Vuitton.” The handbag? “Chanel clutch.” What about your dress? “I’ve forgotten the label.”  Paris has been a marketer’s dream, changing outfits many times a day, accessorizing the designer threads with luxury handbags and sunglasses. Each time she’s pictured with a new accessory - such as a $2700 Louis Vuitton Monogram Alma Bag - it’s worth thousands of dollars of advertising for the label, generating calls from fashion followers across the country.

Paris is often dismissed as “famous for nothing” and other such denigrating comments, but she is making serious hay from her notoriety, pulling in a reported $260M in 2006 from her various business ventures.  At 25, she owns a nightclub, has an album, starred on tv and has acted in several movies, has a clothing and handbag line, a watch collection, a cosmetic line, and now a perfume line.  Her album was produced by her own record label, Heiress Records. Paris was also the most popular Google news search topic for 2006.

“A lot of my friends still don’t have a job and they live at home and have to ask their parents for everything,” she has said. “I haven’t accepted money from my parents since I was 18. Since then, I’ve worked on my own. It feels good that I don’t ever have to depend on a man or my family for anything.”

After her lunch at Otto, Paris dropped by the Royal North Shore Children’s Hospital in Sydney yesterday to meet sick patients and signed autographs on request. Afterward she said, “It’s great, I love it here, I want to buy a house. It’s beautiful.”  Hilton’s visit caused a stir of excitement among the hospital’s staff, especially after she posed for photos with some young doctors who draped a stethoscope over her shoulder.”I love Australia,” she said. “I just wanted to see the kids. I love the kids, I just wanted to give back. The kids were really sweet.” Jessica Nord, 10, chatted to the blonde about her appendix operation and how difficult it was to bring pets into Australia.

While Paris was establishing that she is indeed the blonde babe for the job, Singleton’s son Jack and pro-surfer Koby Abberton were selecting 40 finalists from a group of hopefuls at the Sydney Hilton Hotel. Paris will next turn up at 1pm on New Year’s Day at the Bondi Iceberg Club for the judging.
