President Bush invites ‘American Idol’ Finalists to the White House
Category: Entertainment, GossipAmerican Idol is the top tv show in America by far, winning the hearts and minds of tens of millions of people every week as it blows away the competition even more each year. It is the one weekly show that drags Americans from their myriad activities to plop down in front of the television for an hour or more. In the latest season, Taylor Hicks won the hearts of television viewers, and the title, and built a large and loyal following. He also has caught the eye of the President. President George W. Bush has invited Taylor Hicks and the Top 10 American Idol finalists to the White House.
The White House announced that Bush will host the Alabama crooner and other finalists from the hugely popular Fox television show in the Oval Office on Friday, 28 July 2006 when the finalists were scheduled to be in Washington for their “American Idols Live” show at the Verizon Center.
The American Idol finalists will get a private tour of the White House before their photo session with the president. It was unclear Friday whether runner-up Katharine McPhee would be attending. She has missed recent tour stops because of bronchitis and laryngitis. Their visit will be the first time “Idol” contestants have been invited to the White House by the president, who was in Colorado this week for a Republican fundraiser.
Taylor Hicks won the most recent season’s contest May 24 after 63 million votes were cast for him in the season finale. That’s more than the 59 million that Bush got in 2004, a record in any U.S. presidential election. Although, to be fair, voters can cast more than one ballot on “American Idol.” Though, in the way the information was given by Ryan Seacrest, it seemed to indicate that 63.4 million votes were cast in total for the American Idol finalist. Actual numbers were never given out by the show.
Taylor Hicks also has a personal connection to the White House. His 9th-grade English teacher at Hoover High School in Birmingham is Laura Bush’s press secretary, Susan Whitson.
