Alexandra Rosenfeld, a 19-year-old tourism student from Languedoc who won the title of Miss France last December, has now been crowned Miss Europe 2006 after edging out Miss Ukraine, Alena Avramenko in the grand final. Besides winning the crowns of Miss Europe and Miss France, this year she was voted as Miss Elsas. She also competed for France at the Miss Universe 2006 pageant in Los Angeles, California on July 23.
The contest culminated on October, 27 in Kiev, the Ukraine – the first time for this country to host the annual contest.
Miss Rosenfeld, competing with 33 other beautiful representatives, was chosen by an international jury headed by Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli. She took home a 100,000 euro (127,000 dollar) purse and a diamond-studded crown made by Chopard estimated at 350,000 euros, according to Interfax news agency. She is the first French woman to win the crown since 1948.
An athletic girl, Alexandra is 1.73 meters tall (5′ 7″) and lives at Saint-Thibry while
studying tourism. Her filmography consists of episodes in some French TV programs, including reality show “Fort Boyard”. She hopes eventually to open a travel agency.
After winning the Miss Europe 2006, Rosenfeld, who is Jewish, received anti-semitic comments on online websites and forums. Speculation and comments over Rosenfeld’s religion started as she won the French national beauty pageant last December as Miss Languedoc. When the contestant answered in the final phase of the competition that her favourite book was Primo Levi’s “If This is a Man” and the competition organisers revealed her last name was “Rosenfeld” some viewers started posting comments on the Internet.
But not all comments were negative – Jewish posters were very pleased with her win:
“I feel reassured by the election of Alexandra Rosenfeld. In a period in which we can no longer ignore anti-Semitism, this election is a small sign that our society is not as corrupt as some would like us to think. As a Jew, I am moved today just as I was moved when Rwanda-born Sonia Rolland was elected Miss France a few years ago. I feel there is some hope.”
Others posted unfriendly remarks on forums such as aufeminin.com, calling Rosenfeld “sale youpin” (“dirty Jewish”) and accusing the producers of orchestrating the victory of the Jewish candidate. They said that since the rights of the program were owned by Endemol which belonged at the time to Jewish producer Arthur and his associate Stephane Courbit, Rosenfeld was propelled to the top.
Rosenfeld didn’t comment these forum remarks. However, she did participate in February’s massive march organised in Paris to denounce anti-Semitism and racism. The demonstration was organised after the brutal murder of a young Jewish phone salesman, Ilan Halimi.
According to European Jewish Press, when Alexandra won her crown as Miss France, the organizer Genevieve de Fontenay reacted to anti-Semitic comments made of Alexandra by saying: “This is the first year we have a young Jewish woman but so what? Alexandra has the right to be Miss France.”
