Tara Conner, Miss USA in Trouble

Tara Conner, crowned last April as the new Miss USA, is in danger of losing her crown – the first since Vanessa Williams lost hers in 1984 after some nude lesbian photos emerged. The 20-year-old Kentucky native has been cavorting in New York City bars and her behavior has pageant officials and Donald Trump concerned.
The exact facts are not publicly known – rumors range from underage drinking (she turns 21 December 18th) to “substance abuse“, along with other behaviors commonly associated with being under the influence. The allegations are ironic, as Tara had slammed pop stars during her answers in the Miss USA pageant, saying that “I think that they’re getting a little bit too much edgy. I think that they are a little bit too risque … I think they need to tone it down a little bit.”
Neither the pageant organizers nor Donald Trump will say specifically what the allegations are. “I can’t really talk about it now. But we have to make a decision. There is no question about that”, said the Donald. In addition to the drinking and cavorting, some say that Tara has failed to show up for promotional appearances and “chafed” at other obligations.
If Tara Conner is removed, runner-up Miss California Tamiko Nash would take over as Miss USA. Tamiko is the third African American woman to be Miss California. She is currently working in the entertainment industry and has appeared in a number of national commercials, on rapper Snoop Dogg’s new album cover and in an E! Networks behind-the-scenes show about Miss USA contestants.
This wouldn’t be the first time Trump has dealt with such a scenario. In 2002, Russia’s Oxana Fedorova won Miss Universe but was stripped of her title after violating her contract. “We had a Miss Universe from Russia that was a total disaster, and we fired her, and Miss Panama took over and she did great,” Trump said.

Reports of misbehavior, including under-age drinking and partying with various men at New York nightclubs began surfacing last week, along with rumors of drug use and a drug test, leading the Miss Universe organization to discuss possibly removing Tara Conner in favor of the runner-up, Tamiko Nash. Many websites printed the firing as fact after Tara was asked to move out of the Miss USA apartment. But, such was not to be – a dramatic Tuesday press conference by The Donald showed he either had a “heart of gold”, as Tara proclaimed, or an extremely astute judgment of the best way to capitalize on the media attention.
