Tiger Woods to Have Cub

Tiger Woods & Elin NordegrenSaturday, 30th December, was Tiger Woods’ 31st birthday, and he celebrated it by sharing with his fans that his Swedish wife, Elin Nordegren, is 2-3 months pregnant.  Their first child is expected in the summer of 2007.  Tiger, who married Elin in October 2004, has frequently spoken about becoming a father for the first time, saying said that he wanted children sooner instead of later.

“We are expecting our first child this summer,” the American world number one said on his official Web site.  “Obviously, we couldn’t be happier and our families are thrilled. I have always wanted to be a dad. I just wish my father could be around to share the experience.”

After a long battle with cancer, Tiger’s father, Earl, died last May. After a 9-week break from golf to deal with his father’s illness and death, Tiger came back to win the British Open, then burst into tears. Even now, when Tiger watches that tournament video, he turns it off just after his final putt, he refuses to watch his breakdown because it brings back the painful memories.

Tiger finished 2006 by winning the Target World Golf Challenge and, considering the tumultuous emotional year, may have had his best year ever on the course. But, even so, Tiger rates 2006 as “a loss” because he lost his father.

“Certainly (this was) the most difficult season I’ve ever had. You don’t ever want to lose a parent, your father, your mentor, your best friend. When that day happens … you think you can handle it and all of a sudden it happens and you find out it affects you much deeper than you thought previously.”

To begin 2007, Tiger has decided to skip next week’s season-opening Mercedes Championship in Hawaii to spend more time with his family.  “I’m going to stick close to home for the next few weeks,” Woods said. “As I said on my Web site Friday, I’m going to start my 2007 PGA Tour season at the Buick Invitational in late January, which will allow Elin and I to spend more time with our families during this very special time in our lives.”

Elin and her twin sister Josefin had been working as nannies for Swedish golfer Jesper Parnevik when he introduced her to Woods during the 2001 British Open. In November 2003, Tiger and Elin attended the Presidents Cup tournament in South Africa and became officially engaged when Tiger proposed at the luxury Shamwari Game Reserve. On October 5, 2004, Tiger and Elin were married by the 19th hole of an exclusive golf resort in Barbados. The ceremony reportedly cost over $1.5 million. Privacy was achieved by buying out the island’s sole helicopter charter company and by booking the entire hotel – 200 rooms ranging in price from $700 to $8,000 per night.  Elin’s mother, Barbro Holmberg, is a politician who served as migration and asylum policy minister of Sweden, while her father, Thomas, is a radio journalist who has served as bureau chief in Washington, D.C. for the Swedish Broadcasting media.
