Stretch marks or striae, as they are called in dermatology, are a form of scarring on the skin with a silvery white hue. Stretch marks are generally associated with pregnancy, obesity, bodybuilding, puberty, and intense physical activity. They result from overstretching of the skin, which disrupts the normal production of collagen, causing a scar. Stretch marks often start off as reddish or purplish in color, then become glossy skin that appears streaked in silver or white. Men and women can get stretch marks on several areas of their bodies, including the abdominal area, thighs, hips, breasts, upper arms or lower back. There are several treatment options for stretch marks.
Lotions and Creams
Use lotion or cream that contain natural vitamin E everyday, this lotion works great for preventing pregnancy stretch marks.
A few studies have shown that applying 0.1 percent tretinoin cream may help with stretch marks. In one study, the treatment reduced the length of the stretch marks by 14 percent and the width by 8 percent. In another study, it decreased the length by 20 percent.
If you are a woman who is pregnant and you are concerned with stretch marks, let your physician know you want to begin preventative treatment before your stomach starts growing.
If you’re not breastfeeding, your dermatologist may prescribe tretinoin cream (commonly known by the trade name Retin-A), alone or in combination with other creams.

If you’re stuck on your caffeinated coffee or tea, make sure you balance the fluids. Drink just as much - or more - water as you drink coffee, tea or soda.
Remember, stretch marks can also result from nutritional deficiency. Be sure to consume foods that promote skin health.
- Foods high in vitamins A, C, D, such as carrots, citrus fruits and milk.
- Protein-rich foods (such as eggs).Â
- Zinc-rich foods such as fish or nuts.
Surgical MethodsBefore you are thinking to do the surgical methods, please note that insurance coverage probably will not cover stretch mark removal because it is a cosmetic procedure.
Laser therapy is another option if you’re looking to improve the appearance of stretch marks after delivery. The degree of success with any treatment will be impacted by your age, your skin tone and even your diet. According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, a surgeon can use different types of lasers depending on the color of the stretch marks. One type reduces the color of dark stretch marks while another stimulates the production of pigment-making cells in already faded stretch marks. A newer type of laser therapy can be used to stimulate the production of collagen and help restore the skin’s elasticity in depressed stretch marks.
