Miss USA, Rachel Smith, Elvis outfitMiss USA Rachel Smith was not very lucky in the Miss Universe 2007 Pageant competition. She was booed during her interview and several audience members chanted “Mexico! Mexico!” until she spoke in Spanish, saying “Buenas noches Mexico. Muchas gracias!” which earned her applause. Mexico has a fierce rivalry with its northern neighbor. Pageant officials said Ms. Smith, 22, was rattled by the denunciations, which echoed other booing she had received during her month long stay in Mexico, notably when she showed off a sleek, white Elvis outfit as her national costume on a runway on one of Mexico City’s grand avenues. In 1993 the Mexicans did the same thing to the Miss America then.

Miss Smith also lipped and fell to the floor during the evening gown competition. Despite an awful fall in her evening dress, Ms. Smith was chosen for the final five, the crowd grew more boisterous, especially because Miss Mexico, Rosa María Ojeda Cuen, had been eliminated. Mario López, the TV actor who was the show’s host, did his best to calm the crowd during a commercial break. “I said in Spanish: ‘Hey, listen, Mexico, the world is watching. Let’s show the world we’re really good hosts,’ ” he recalled. He was hosted the event together with 1999 Miss Teen USA Vanessa Minnillo.

Hours before the pageant began, dozens of protesters held a mock ceremony in downtown Mexico City that featured “Miss Marijuana,” “Miss Sexual Health,” “Miss Human Rights” and other candidates with obscenities written across their sashes. The group yelled “Neither ugly nor beautiful, should a woman be considered an object!”

Rachel Smith may have missed that there was applause mixed in with the booing when she picked herself back up from her fall, which some Mexicans pointed to as a reflection perhaps of the other side of the story — the admiration and respect that many Mexicans had for Ms. Smith and, alongside their frustration, for her country.

Pageant organizers say the Miss Universe contest carefully selects women who are intelligent, well-mannered and cultured
