Sanjaya-Fauxhawk-Malakar Smarter than Simon

Sanjaya is a whole lot smarter than many pundits, and Simon Cowell, think he is. As Peter Noone said – Simon is wrong – it is not a singing competition, but a vote-getting competition. And, as Simon used to know a few years ago, a key method of getting votes is to appeal to a particular fan base that is not taken by another singer. Sanjaya’s fan base is young teen girls – a fan base not addressed by any other singer.
Sanjaya hair styles may attract lots of laughs from adults, but they also get him noticed, discussed, promoted – and as that occurs his good looks and broad smile turn young teen hearts to mush. How many times will an adult vote for his/her favorite singer? Now how many times will a 13-year-old girl vote for her heart throb?
This explains why Sanjaya remains in the competition while far better singers are now watching him on television every week.
Sanjaya hair remains a fascination for many, partly because he has a lot of it and changes its style every week, and partly because the style gets more ridiculous each week. The latest style has been dubbed a “fauxhawk”, which looks like a mohawk, but without shaving the sides.
Simon was on cue when he suggested that Sanjaya clearly had not looked in a mirror before the show, while Sanjaya was ready for him and suggested Simon was merely jealous because he couldn’t pull off the hairstyle himself. Some pundits have charged that Sanjaya was displaying a meaner side of himself in the repartee, but to us it just seemed a mild and humorous rejoinder.
While one woman is on a hunger strike until Sanjaya is booted from the show, we are rooting for the wily and handsome young choir boy to overcome the odds and his lack of singing talent. He adds character to the show, and also illustrates once again that Noonism: It is not a singing competition, but a vote-getting competition.
