The 21-year-old Korean fashion model, Kang Seung-hyun, 178cm tall and weighing 51kg, has won the Ford Models’ “Supermodel of the World” contest. She became the first model of Asian ancestry to win the Ford ‘Supermodel of the world’ award in the contest’s 25-year history.

The U.S. media praised her looks and walk as the best, named her the ‘pearl of the Orient’. Kang won US$250,000 in prize money and signed a three-year contract with Ford Models, one of the top modelling agencies in the US, founded by Jerry and Eileen Ford.

The freshman in the modelling department at Dongduk Women’s University has moved into an exclusive apartment for models provided by Ford. She said, “People here say I’m beautiful or perfect. I never thought so in Korea. All the praise makes me feel I’m pretty…’

She added: ‘Preparing to be picked as the Korean representative for the Ford contest in September, I walked for hours along the Han River in the summer wearing a winter jumper. I lost 5kg in two months.’

Next month she will participate in the New York Fashion Week and also in shows in Milan and Paris. ‘I’d love to do a show for Custom National, my favourite brand,’ she said. ‘Taking part in top-rate luxury brand shows is of course a dream for any model.’

The prestigious model contest was packed with gorgeous girls from some 50 countries. Each are winners who have competed in and won rigorous year-long local competitions from 50 countries and for the first time ever, with recognition to the remarkable power of Internet social networks, a finalist has been selected from the over 20,000 members of the Ford Supermodel community located @ Myspace.com.

The Fifty finalists from around the world arrived in New York last week for supermodel boot camp of photo shoots. The camp ended in a final runway show in Manhattan on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008 where it commenced with a beauty contest style introduction.

The Ford Models’ “Supermodel of the World” contest was sponsored by Westfield and Maybelline New York.
