Nicole Kidman: Say NO to violence against women

“One in three women will encounter violence in some way, shape or form against them in their lifetime,” Nicole Kidman said, asking that “ending violence against women be made a top priority for governments everywhere.” The Oscar-winning Hollywood actress, named a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Fund for Women in 2006, was at U.N. Headquarters in New York Tuesday to brief officials and reporters about the ongoing struggle to end violence against women around the globe.

Dressed in a loose, navy-blue dress, the Oscar winner looked every inch seven months pregnant as she campaigned for additional support for an online petition aimed at eliminating violence against women. According to UN figures, the ‘Say NO to violence against women’ petition has already gained the support of more than 210,000 people.

“So much of it is shrouded in silence. What we are trying to do is say this is something that needs to be addressed,” said the Oscar-winning Hollywood superstar.

“A lot of it is taking away the stigma, creating awareness and not making it a silent pandemic,” she added.

“I want to encourage people of all nations to unite behind our call to end violence against women,” she said, urging people to sign on to the UNIFEM campaign at http://www.saynotoviolence.org.

Nicole Kidman, 40, is expecting her first biological child with Kiwi-born country singer Keith Urban in July. She was pregnant once before with her ex-husband Tom Cruise but suffered a miscarriage.

Kidman and Cruise adopted two children, Isabella and Connor. She married Urban in Sydney in 2006.
