Sarah Palin Reverses Wardrobe Issue

The “soccer mom” and Republican vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin, declared she would forego the expensive outfits bought by Republican National Committee (RNC). The US$150,000 in clothes and accessories was provided for her and her family because they didn’t own an expensive wardrobe for the campaign. But she will return the expensive outfits because the clothes and accessories didn’t belong to her.
Ms. Palin said, “Those clothes are not my property, just like the lighting and the staging and everything else the RNC purchased. I’m not taking them with me. I’m back to wearing my own clothes from my favorite consignment shop in Anchorage, Alaska.” She initially had hoped to “ignore this wardrobe thing”, but instead had decided to address it head-on.
The Republican vice presidential candidate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who has described herself on the campaign trail as a moose-hunting hockey mom, told the crowd at the Tampa Convention Center on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008, that her earrings, a gift from her mother-in-law, were also a product of her home state.
“These are from Todd’s mom who is a native American up in Alaska. Native American. Native Alaskan. And my wedding ring, it’s in Todd’s pocket because it hurts when I shake hands. A $US35 wedding ring from Hawaii that I bought myself. I always thought, it’s not what it’s made of. It’s what it represents.”
She also pointed out that she was wearing a lapel pin in honour of her oldest son, who is serving with the US military.
“I’m a blue-star mom. I’m wearing this in honour of my son who is fighting over in Iraq right now,” she said, before ending her inventory of her attire, saying “enough about clothes and hairdos and high heels”.
Politico.com reported that the Republican leadership spent $US150,000 on chic designer outfits for Ms Palin. The expenses include $75,062 spent at Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis and $41,850 in St. Louis in early September. The committee also reported spending $4,100 for makeup and hair consulting. This put her sharply at odds with her humble “hockey mom”‘ image.
The RNC also spent $4,902 at Atelier, a stylish men’s clothing store in New York. Other purchases included a $92 romper and matching hat with ears for Palin’s baby, Trig, at Pacifier, a baby store in Minneapolis.
Senator McCain’s campaign defended the expenditures, saying the apparel will go to charity after the November 4 election.
“With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it’s remarkable that we’re spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses,” said McCain spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt, who has been traveling with Palin. “It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign.”
