The media is abuzz with speculation over Britney Spears’ mental health, and possible effects on her custody battle with Kevin Federline.

People magazine’s website quoted “a source” saying that Britney had checked herself into Eric Clapton’s Crossroads rehab center in Antigua, in the Caribbean - but then checked out the next day. Acess Hollywood then said the story was false, but quoted no source at all. A woman who answered the phone at Crossroads told The Associated Press that she couldn’t confirm or deny anyone’s presence at the facility.

Then a gossip blog on Hollywood.com posted an email purportedly from Felicia Culotta, who had supposedly worked for Britney for ten years, describing how the pop star was spiraling toward rock bottom and how friends and family wanted her to seek treatment. Ruben Garay, who runs ThatOtherBlog, said the e-mail was legitimate. “I assure you with 100 percent certainty that the … e-mail that Felicia sent in is 100 percent accurate,” Garay told the AP in a phone interview. Garay said he ran the fan Web site worldofbritney.com, which he shut down last year, and has known Culotta since 2003. more…

The pop princess, Britney Spears, 25, reportedly collapsed shortly after leading the New Year’s Eve countdown at Las Vegas Nightclub and was carried out by bodyguards. The star was hired to host the festivities at Ceasars Palace’s PURE nightclub for $300,000. Also seen celebrating with Britney were Marlan Williams, NBA retired player Julius Irving and poker pro Chris Ferguson. Rocker Dave Navarro, who hosted a New Year’s event at a club in Treasure Island, was also seen. Britney hosted two countdowns (one in the VIP section of the Las Vegas club and the other on the clubs outdoor terrace) before fainting around 12.50am. Robin Leach of Luxe Life, reported that Britney yelled to her club crowd: “What happens in Vegas always stays in Vegas” and after the countdown she wished everybody a Happy New Year. The New York Post reported that around 12:45 a.m., Spears, who purportedly had been drinking champagne and dancing to her own song “I’m a Slave 4 U,” “went into a dead faint and just fell right to the floor.” Britney had been reported earlier at the JackRabbit nightclub in Scottsdale with Paris Hilton’s former squeeze, footballer Matt Leinart. So, K-Fed stands up Britney at a romantic dinner; Britney charges off to his hotel and finds him with another woman; divorce by instant text message follows, K-Fed instantly becomes Fed-Ex; Fed-Ex threatens Britney with release of an explicit sex tape if she doesn’t pay him off, Scrawls idiotic hate note on shower door; then changes tune and begins singing her love songs and sending her flowers. Britney is unmoved and is purging everything Federline from her home and life as she slims down and perks up.  Got it?

Britney married Kevin Federline eight months after ending a 55-hour Las Vegas marriage to her childhood friend, Jason Alexander. Spears, 24, married Federline, 28, in 2004. They have a 1-year-old son, Sean Preston, and an infant son, Jayden James, who was born Sept. 12.  Kevin also has two children, a son and a daughter, with ex-girlfriend Shar Jackson.  Citing “irreconcilable differences,” Spears filed for divorce last week.

According to British tabloid News of the World, the real reason for the Britney-KFed breakup were his nights out in Las Vegas boozing, gambling and picking up prostitutes, culminating in Britney catching him with another woman. Britney more…
